To get around town, various solutions can be proposed to you :
Plan your stay
There is so much to do in Fortaleza which plays perfectly of its advantage of city developed at the edge of the sea, in a state remained resolutely wild (the Ceara), and offering to you only a few kilometers away of the center a change of scenery … Local specialties, museums and cultural centers, local events, wide open spaces, turquoise sea and immense sandy beaches are offered to you to brighten your future trip up. Discover below an overview of things to see and do and find other ideas and spots on the blog.
Upon your arrival
Freshly landed on Brazilian soil and coming to take your quarters in one of our Seaflats, go for a walk along the Beira Mar avenue, which is almost 5 kilometers long. Small merchants and beach barraca welcome you all the way to the Pont des Anglais where you will discover a magnificent panorama of the city. The Japanese garden is also a local curiosity. In the opposite direction, on the yacht club and the port side, go to the fish market where you will buy the fish that will be cooked in one of the stalls facing it !
In the evening, it is also along the avenue that is held a typical craft market. Many street artists also find themselves at dusk, do not hesitate to take the small tourist train that is the image of the city : very festive.
The city center
After discovering the seaside and its modern buildings, dive into the inner streets of the colorful buildings. Take a detour to appreciate the architecture of the José de Alencar Theater and the majestic cathedral of the city. The museum of Ceara is not far and you can satisfy all your curiosity about the history of the city and the state (15 000 exhibits).
Going up towards the seaside, do not forget to go through the central market, a building full of stalls where you will find everything you need to bring back memories to your loved ones. Unless the originality of an old prison transformed into businesses pushes you to the Emcetur. Then come back at the end of the day by the cultural center of Dragao do Mar which is worth the detour (planetarium, cinema, exhibitions, museums …) and which is always more animated at this time.
Coco Ecological Park
Fortaleza hosts Coco Park, the largest urban park in Latin America (1,155 hectares). This oasis of greenery welcomes into its midst a gigantic mangrove, that is to say a forest mixed with marsh typical of tropical regions. More developed areas include children’s play areas and well-maintained walking trails. You will be able to meet small monkeys, remarkable trees and all endemic fauna and flora of the region … Feel free to schedule a boat trip along the Rio Coco to discover it, we recommend you to go through a local guide to avoid too isolated places.
The Place des Martyrs is also a place of choice for a drink facing the sea in the shade of trees more than a century old. It is the oldest place in the city.
Aquatic activities
The beaches of Iracema, Meireles and Mucuripe facing the residence are famous for walking and enjoying the evening entertainment. The main bars and restaurants of the center are just a few steps away and there are several sports facilities. More to the east by car, the beach of the Future is also to be seen, its huts are undoubtedly the best equipped and the most animated (swimming pool, showers, massages, saunas … as well as shows in the evening).
In Aquiraz, to the east of the city, the Beach Park water complex was voted second best theme park in the world in 2014 by Tripadvisor. For thrill seekers, the Insano toboggan, 50m high, will probably do the trick. The less adventurous will also enjoy the many other thematic areas to cool off in the midday sun.
More to the east
For excursions outside the city, you can continue to Morro Branco, Beberibe and Canoa Quebrada or Icapui to discover these impressive red cliffs. Canoa Quebrada is certainly the trendy resort on the East Coast when Beberibe has remained more authentic. We will recommend the first for its local life and its beach, and the second for its extraordinary cliffs and so photogenic.
As a general rule, take advantage of this excursion to relax outside the rhythm of the capital.
Further west
On the other side of Fortaleza, Cumbuco is definitely a place to stop. 30km from the center, this fishing village offers beautiful views and has become a kite-surfer’s paradise. Swim in small freshwater lakes, ride a buggy or horse ride in the huge white sand dunes, or opt for a traditional fishing boat trip (jangada) are activities to put your program. Continuing on the coast, stop at Lagoinha with its coconut palm trees stretching as far as the eye can see and, 20 kilometers further, to Mundau or Icarai de Amontada.
Further, Jericocoara is considered one of the most beautiful sites in Brazil, but you should consider spending at least one night because of the distance.
